When you’re putting together a sensitivity toothpaste, two ingredients always come up — potassium nitrate and Novamin. They both work, but the way they work is completely different.
Let’s start with potassium nitrate. It’s the old-school workhorse. The potassium ions basically seep into the tiny tubules in your dentin and calm the nerve endings down so they stop firing pain signals. No physical barrier, just a nerve that’s been told to hush. Takes about two to four weeks of daily brushing for full effect, and if someone stops using it, the sensitivity creeps back. We use it a lot in whitening formulas because you already have peroxide or other actives going on, and potassium nitrate is gentle and easy to blend.
Novamin is a totally different beast. It’s a bioactive glass — calcium sodium phosphosilicate, originally made for bone grafting. When it hits saliva, it releases calcium and phosphate ions and builds a layer that looks a lot like hydroxyapatite right over the exposed dentin. That plugs the tubules physically. Relief tends to feel faster, and that protective layer doesn’t just wash away the moment you rinse. We’ve helped brands switch from potassium nitrate to Novamin and saw their product positioning shift from basic sensitive care to premium oral repair.
We get asked all the time if you can use both together. Yes, you can. Some formulas combine them — calm the nerve and plug the tubule at the same time.
One non-negotiable, no matter which active you pick: keep the abrasivity low. Pair either one with a gentle hydrated silica system. If your base paste is too scratchy, it just re-opens the tubules and makes the problem worse. We test every batch for RDA to make sure we aren’t undoing the work of the active.
