Sea Buckthorn Toothpaste: What B2B Buyers Should Know Before Adding It

Sea buckthorn has been moving from skincare into oral care. We've run a number of trials for European and Canadian brands over the past two years. Here's what we've learned on the factory floor.

Why the Interest

The berry is high in omega‑7 (palmitoleic acid), typically 25–40% of the oil. Omega‑7 is linked to mucosal tissue repair. It also brings vitamins C and E, plus antioxidants. In oral care, that translates to gum health and gentle repair – two claims that are getting easier to sell.

Retailers are looking for differentiation. Fluoride and charcoal are crowded. Sea buckthorn is still relatively new on shelves. That's the opportunity.

Formulation Reality

Sea buckthorn oil is dark orange. At high concentrations, the paste looks off and the taste is tart, slightly bitter. Concentration-wise, we stay between 0.3% and 0.8%, using a standardized extract or oil.

Flavor pairing is where it gets tricky. Citrus, ginger, or a mild mint works. Strong menthol or cinnamon doesn't – we've tried. Strong menthol or cinnamon don't.

Stability

Antioxidants degrade. We run accelerated tests at 40°C/75% RH. Total phenolic content dropped about 12% after three months in our internal tests. Color shifted slightly but stayed acceptable. We use opaque tubes to block light.

Market Fit

Global sea buckthorn extract market was around $280 million in 2023. Oral care is a small slice – under 5% – but growing. The natural toothpaste segment itself is projected to grow at 6–7% annually through 2030. Brands in the natural channel, supermarkets with a botanical section, and private label programs looking for a premium herbal SKU are the natural fit. It's not a mass-market flavor. Less competition means better margin.
