Toothpaste Paste Color: From White to Transparent to Colorful

Traditional toothpastes use calcium carbonate or dicalcium phosphate as abrasives. These ingredients are white themselves, so when they’re mixed into the paste, the paste turns white.

But white toothpaste has one problem: over time, the color can dull and look a bit “flat.” That’s because the refractive index of calcium carbonate doesn‘t quite match the liquid phase in the paste, so light doesn’t pass through well. Still, that hasn‘t stopped it from being the most popular choice — after all, people buy toothpaste to brush their teeth, not to look at it.

White toothpaste is the safest, most cost-effective option. If your brand is positioned as “basic care” or “mass market,” white is never the wrong choice.

Transparent Toothpaste: Looks Different, Made Different

Transparent toothpaste came later. It looks like a gel — some with color, some completely clear.

How is it made? By changing the abrasive.

Transparent toothpaste can only use silica as the abrasive. Silica has a special property: its refractive index can be adjusted through the production process. When you match silica‘s refractive index to the liquid phase (mainly sorbitol and water), light can pass straight through, and the paste becomes transparent.

Different batches of silica have different refractive indices. A slight change in the liquid ratio alters transparency. Temperature also affects it. So factories that can make transparent toothpaste usually have some technical know-how.

Transparent toothpaste has a hidden advantage: silica is chemically inert and doesn‘t react with fluoride. In traditional toothpastes, calcium carbonate can “fight” with fluoride, gradually reducing its effectiveness. Transparent toothpaste doesn’t have this problem.

Transparent toothpaste looks more “premium” and works well for mid-to-high-end brands. But the technical bar is higher than white toothpaste — you‘ll want an experienced factory partner.

Colorful Toothpaste: From Single Color to Stripes

Once you have a transparent gel base, adding color becomes easy. Just mix in some pigments, and you get colorful toothpaste — red, blue, green, purple — whatever you want.

Then there’s something more complex: striped toothpaste. A white paste matrix wrapped in several differently colored transparent gel stripes. When you squeeze, the white and colored stripes come out together — like a rainbow.

The challenge with striped toothpaste is: colors can’t bleed into each other. If the blue gel and white paste mix over time, you get a murky gray. So special pigments or encapsulation technology are needed to lock the colors in place.

There‘s also color-changing toothpaste that shifts as you brush — from white to blue or pink. It uses micro-encapsulation technology: the capsules burst during brushing, releasing the color.

Colorful toothpaste is a powerful differentiator. Kids’ toothpaste can use bright colors to attract children. Purple toothpaste can tap into the “visual whitening” trend. Striped toothpaste just looks more premium. But colorful toothpastes are more complex to produce and usually come with higher MOQs.

What This Means for You

If you‘re considering starting your own toothpaste brand, paste color is the first step in differentiation.

White is the safest, lowest-cost option, perfect for the mass market. Transparent and colorful offer more visual impact, ideal for mid-to-high-end or niche segments — kids, young women, consumers who care about “aesthetics”.

As a one-stop custom factory, we don’t just do “whatever color you want.” From white to transparent to colorful, from single-color to striped to color-changing, from formula to packaging — we handle it all.

The key point: color isn‘t just added randomly. Different abrasives, different pigments, different processes — they all determine the paste’s transparency, stability, and cost.
